How to Make your Talk Radio Show Stand Out and Hang On to its Audience!

Have you ever listened to talk radio? Do you find yourself drifting off? If you want to keep your listeners attention you need to stand up and grab them then don’t let go. There are things you can do when giving a radio interview to keep your listeners attention and make your show stand out or be more interesting than the last show. Remember, each show has a first impression; there could always be a new listener out there, so make every show’s first impression stand out.

One way to do that is to immediately surprise your guest in the introduction. You can do this by saying something to make them laugh, or asking them about something you saw about them on their website, a hobby they have or something personal. Make your introduction different than every other introduction.

Before each show ask yourself “What do I want to accomplish with this interview?” and ask your guest ahead of time what do they want to accomplish with the interview. They probably want the free promotion or exposure the show will give them, maybe they are an author and they want to sell more books, or just get some media experience. The more you know, the better you can work the show to the advantage of everyone.

It is your job as the host to make what you and your guest want to accomplish happen in a creative way. Some ways you can do that are:

  • Research your guest
  • Read their bio
  • Look up old interviews and then ask questions that have not been asked before.
  • Look up any other radio or television appearances the guest has had.
  • Find out what your guests passions and/or causes are.
  • Incorporate what the guest wants to get out of the interview, into the interview.

Remember, every time you do a show you want to begin with a bang and end with a flourish.
